Motoring journalists have named the Land Rover Defender Octa as the best 4x4 on sale in the UK, according to Autocar. The British brand's model topped the list, beating competitors like Jeep, Ford, and Mercedes.
Top Rankings
Autocar ranked the Land Rover Defender Octa first, stating it makes "serious off-roading easy" and offers a "spacious and well-finished cabin with loads of storage space." The only downside noted was that the Octa is "large and heavy." Autocar added: "Its capabilities are beyond question, and the way in which it sets about its work off road makes it seem like a car built for people who don't even like off-roading."
The Jeep Wrangler secured second place, described as "unstoppable" off road and "well equipped as standard." Autocar commented: "If there's one name that can trump Land Rover for off road cred, it's Jeep - and the Wrangler its most roughty-toughty offering." However, they noted that the Wrangler is being discontinued in Europe, with final sales expected in 2026.
The Toyota Land Cruiser came third, praised for its "light and fairly precise" steering. Autocar explained: "On the road this means it's less sophisticated, with a slightly more energetic ride and lower levels of refinement. Yet it handles accurately and its electrified 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine makes up for what it lacks in polished manners with grunt."
