Aldi has urged shoppers to stop keeping their eggs in the fridge. The supermarket giant says, if you're concerned about eggs going off, then there's actually a better kitchen appliance for you to store them inside after shopping: the freezer.
Freezing Eggs: A Cracking Idea
To help educate and inspire shoppers, Aldi, which has stores in Birmingham, has worked with Kate, @thefullfreezer, to share her top tips and little-known freezing hacks. Kate said: "A Cracking Idea: Yes, you CAN freeze eggs! Just crack and whisk first, then freeze in usable amounts. Defrost in cold water when you need them – they might look a bit different, but they’re perfect once cooked."
Aldi's Commitment to Reducing Food Waste
Food waste is an urgent environmental and social issue. Aldi, which is rivalled by Lidl, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Tesco and Asda, committed to reduce food waste by 20% by 2025, and halve it by 2030 (relative to 2017 baseline), in line with the UK Food and Drink Pact 2030 and UN SDG Champions 12.3 commitments. This goal has vital importance to reduce the environmental impact of wasted food, and to help alleviate food poverty.
Partnerships and Industry Initiatives
To achieve these commitments, Aldi is working hard to prevent waste in operations where possible, and when waste does happen, to ensure it has partnerships to distribute surplus food to charities. Aldi says: "We also work with our suppliers to minimise waste and we support a range of industry initiatives. We support WRAP’s UK Food Waste Reduction Roadmap, an industry-wide programme that guides businesses to target, measure and act upon food waste. It aims to achieve a 50% reduction in food waste in the UK by 2030."
Early Success and Revised Targets
In 2022, Aldi cut food waste within its operations by 57% since 2017, meaning it hit its 2030 target eight years early. In light of this, the company revised the target and is now aiming to reduce food waste by 90% by 2030 against a 2017 baseline. Aldi adds: "Aldi is supporting Love Food Hate Waste to make the most out of the food you buy and transform leftovers into family favourites. Get involved and help do your bit this Food Waste Action Week 17-23 March."
