British shoppers are being alerted to a significant change in the availability and quality of strawberries this summer. Following a cooler-than-usual spring, British strawberries are ripening for a longer period, leading to larger and sweeter fruit, according to British Berry Growers.
Extended Ripening Enhances Flavour
Nick Marston, chairman of British Berry Growers, explained: "The start of the British strawberry season is always a highly anticipated moment, and while the cooler spring has meant consumers have had to wait a little longer this year, the quality of this fruit is outstanding." He added that the extended maturation period helps ensure shapely strawberries and enhances their flavours during development. The cooler temperatures allow the berries to build up incredible sweetness and size.
"Our growers are harvesting berries of significant size, boasting superior quality and good sugar levels," Marston said. "As the phrase goes, good things come to those who wait."
Technology Extends the Season
To adapt to the British weather, berry growers are employing new technology and eco-friendly methods to ensure the best possible harvest and extend the British strawberry season. Nic Leeds, director at Berry World's Withers Farm in Herefordshire, noted: "The result is that consumers will see sweeter, juicier and in some cases, larger berries."
Berry growers, including Dyson Farming, are utilising technology such as vertical farming systems to grow strawberries throughout the year in Lincolnshire. Lucie Redwood, commercial manager at Dyson Farming, said: "At Dyson Farming, we engineer the growing environment using advanced robotics, intelligent systems and renewable energy to produce British strawberries all year round."
Strawberries and Summer Traditions
Strawberries are a staple for UK households each summer and are synonymous with events like BBC Wimbledon, which returns in June for a two-week tournament ending in July. This year, despite the later start, the fruit promises to be of exceptional quality, making the wait worthwhile for consumers.
