Diesel and petrol drivers who filled up in June received a massive boost as fuel prices tumbled to record lows. Diesel dropped by a record 17p per litre, providing significant savings for motorists, according to the RAC.
Record Drop in Diesel Prices
The RAC reported that diesel prices fell by 16.6p per litre in June, from an average of 183.75p at the start of the month to 167.14p by the end. This marks the biggest single-month decline since 2000. Petrol also decreased by 7.97p per litre, from 159.37p to 151.40p.
For a typical 55-litre family car, petrol drivers saved £4.40 per tank, with costs dropping from £87.65 to £83.27. Diesel drivers saved even more, with a full tank now £9 cheaper—from £101.06 to £91.93.
Supermarket Price Cuts
The big four supermarkets saw even greater reductions, with average diesel prices falling 19p per litre from 182.37p to 163.28p. Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, commented: “As things stand, petrol should dip under 150p soon and diesel ought to get to below 160p but we would need the price of oil to fall further to see a return to the pre-conflict prices.”
RAC Mobile Mechanic of the Year
In related news, Jack Halstead, a 30-year-old vehicle service and repair technician from Portsmouth, won the prestigious ‘RAC Mobile Mechanic of the Year’ award at the RAC’s annual awards ceremony at Silverstone. Halstead, who has been with the RAC for two years and has 14 years of experience, was recognized for his strong work ethic and dedication to customers.
Halstead said: “I’m thrilled to have won the RAC Mobile Mechanic of the Year award. I love servicing and repairing customers’ cars at their homes or workplaces. It’s so much more interesting than my previous experience working in garages.” He added that he enjoys building trust with customers by showing them the issues with their vehicles.
