Poundstretcher stores in West Midlands at risk without plan

Poundstretcher, the discount retail chain operating numerous stores across the West Midlands, is at significant risk of entering administration unless a proposed restructuring plan receives approval, a High Court hearing has revealed.

The company, which employs approximately 3,000 staff nationwide and runs nearly 300 outlets including locations in Wolverhampton and Birmingham, was acquired two years ago by US investment firm Fortress, which also owns Majestic Wine, for an undisclosed amount.

Financial challenges and restructuring necessity

During the hearing held on May 6, lawyers representing Poundstretcher stated that without the restructuring plan, the company would lack sufficient funds to meet a £2.8 million funding requirement due in the week starting June 28. This shortfall is projected to escalate to £9.7 million by the week beginning July 26.

Tom Smith KC, counsel for Poundstretcher, submitted written arguments indicating that under these circumstances, the company's directors would likely have no alternative but to file for administration. In such an event, administrators would continue trading for a limited period while using available liquidity to facilitate a stock sale.

The restructuring plan aims to restore Poundstretcher to financial stability and enable the implementation of a turnaround business strategy. Since 2020, the group's performance has deteriorated due to subdued customer confidence, rising operating costs, and inflationary pressures.

Proposed changes and court proceedings

The plan includes shifting the product mix to include more well-known household brands and optimising the store portfolio by selectively opening locations in areas with higher footfall. In March, the company revealed its intention to ask landlords to reduce rents across its estate, though it insisted no store closures or job cuts were planned.

The hearing, classified as a convening hearing, sought judicial permission to hold creditor meetings to vote on the restructuring plan. Mr Justice Hildyard ruled in favour of proceeding, with creditor meetings scheduled for May 26. If approved, the plan will return to the High Court for a sanction hearing on June 4.

Company response and store locations

A spokesperson for Poundstretcher welcomed the court's decision, emphasising that the plan focuses on strengthening the company's long-term position and enabling future growth. They reiterated that no store closures or redundancies are planned, and stores will continue to serve customers throughout the process.

Poundstretcher operates multiple stores across the West Midlands, including in Acocks Green, Birmingham; Maypole Retail Park, Birmingham; Martineau Place, Birmingham; Brierley Hill High Street; Cotteridge, Birmingham; Erdington, Birmingham; Hall Green, Birmingham; Hednesford; Newport Retail Park, Newport; Stourport; Sutton Coldfield; Telford Shopping Centre, Telford; Telford Madeley; The Saddlers Centre, Walsall; and Wolverhampton.
