Aldi Confirms Closure of Free From Sections in Major Retail Decision
Aldi has officially announced the discontinuation of its dedicated Free From sections, a move that has left numerous shoppers feeling "devastated." The supermarket chain initiated this trial in January 2025, implementing it across 300 out of its 1,000 locations nationwide. While certain Birmingham stores were part of this initial rollout, the company has decided not to proceed with these specialized sections moving forward.
Shoppers Express Frustration and Disappointment
The conclusion of the trial has sparked significant dismay among gluten-free consumers and individuals with coeliac disease, who heavily relied on these sections for essential dietary needs. On social media platforms like TikTok, customers have voiced their strong frustrations regarding this decision.
One user commented, "This is messed up. Some people need this to live. They can’t do that I swear." Another added, "Nooo it was the only bread I had liked and could stomach." A third expressed, "This is a disgrace! It’s so limited in most stores for basics like pasta, bread etc without taking away options." A fourth remarked, "Absolutely absurd, that really sucks if they’re getting rid of it."
Aldi's Statement on the Trial Conclusion
An Aldi spokesperson addressed the situation, stating, "Last year we introduced dedicated Free From sections in selected stores as a trial. Whilst this trial has now come to an end, we are still committed to ensuring customers can get everything they need at Aldi and shoppers can still find products suited to speciality diets on our shelves. We continue to engage with key allergy charities to ensure that we’re supportive of speciality diets wherever we can."
Context: Aldi's Sustainability Initiatives
This announcement coincides with Aldi's confirmation of its sustainability efforts, including plans to power 500 of its UK stores with solar energy by the end of 2026. The company intends to install solar panels at an additional 62 locations this year, expanding on the existing rollout that has already equipped over 470 stores nationwide.
Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, commented, "We’ve made significant progress over the past year, and we are advancing the next phase of our solar rollout across even more stores in 2026. The programme has expanded to cover even more sites than originally planned, and through ongoing investment in our estate, we’re making our operations more resilient while ensuring we continue to deliver great value for customers in a more sustainable way."
