Aldi Crowned UK's Cheapest Supermarket in Which? Price Analysis
Aldi Named Cheapest UK Supermarket in Which? Study

Aldi Retains Title as UK's Most Affordable Supermarket

In the latest price comparison from consumer group Which?, Aldi has once again secured its position as the United Kingdom's cheapest supermarket. The analysis, conducted in February, evaluated a standard shopping list comprising 89 essential items, including a mix of branded and own-brand products such as Birds Eye peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

Detailed Price Breakdown for 89-Item Basket

The study revealed that a basket at Aldi averaged £161.56, making it the most economical choice for shoppers. Lidl followed closely behind with a cost of £162.75, just £1.19 more expensive than Aldi. Asda ranked third at £181.06, while Tesco, when using a Clubcard, came in fourth at £181.58.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Waitrose emerged as the most expensive supermarket, with the same 89-item shop totalling £217.02. This represents a significant difference of £55.46 compared to Aldi, highlighting the substantial savings available by choosing discount retailers.

Expanded Analysis for 225-Item Shopping List

Which? also examined a larger shopping list of 225 items, where Tesco's Clubcard offered the cheapest option at £580.35, narrowly beating Asda at £584.32 by just £3.97. However, shoppers without a Clubcard would pay £629.25 at Tesco, an additional £48.90. Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this larger comparison due to their more limited product ranges.

Waitrose remained the priciest for the bigger shop, costing £650.11, which is almost £70 more than Tesco for Clubcard holders. This underscores the importance of loyalty schemes in achieving better value for money.

Expert Insights on Grocery Savings

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on the findings, stating, "Aldi has taken the top spot this month, but the fierce battle between the discounters means Lidl also remains a fantastic option for those looking to slash their grocery bills. Tesco’s Clubcard offers solid value for lovers of branded products, but these savings should be more widely accessible, and we look forward to Tesco widening access later this year."

She added, "With budgets still under immense pressure, our analysis shows that being picky about where you shop can put hundreds of pounds back in your pocket over the year."
