Supermarket giant Asda has launched a new money-saving fuel offer for drivers, following reports of some motorists boycotting its petrol stations. The initiative comes in response to customer feedback about pricing and service changes at its forecourts.
The New Fuel Saving Offer
From December 1 to 31, 2025, drivers can save three pence per litre on fuel at Asda Express stores. To qualify for the discount, customers must first spend £15 or more on groceries inside the Asda Express shop before paying for both their shopping and fuel at the till.
Joseph Sutton, Asda's vice president of Express, foodservice and fuel, explained the reasoning behind the promotion. "We know every penny matters for our customers," he said. "This offer gives people a little extra help - letting them save on fuel while offering unbeatable value as they stock up on everyday essentials or festive treats in the run-up to Christmas."
Driver Discontent and Market Context
The new offer follows public expressions of dissatisfaction from some Asda customers. One driver questioned whether Express store prices remained higher than in main Asda supermarkets, and noted that forecourt price differences had sometimes been minimal. Another stated they had been "boycotting Asda petrol stations ever since they went to 'pay at pump' and abandoned manned kiosks."
The promotion also comes amidst a slight easing in average fuel prices. Recent data shows a litre of petrol fell by 0.58p to an average of 134.97p, while diesel decreased by 0.81p to 142.57p. This means filling a typical 55-litre family car currently costs approximately £74.23 for petrol and £78.41 for diesel.
Asda's Broader Recovery Plan
The fuel initiative coincides with Asda's ongoing efforts to stabilise its business after operational disruptions. Executive Chairman Allan Leighton acknowledged that a major systems change, known as Project Future, had "severely disrupted our systems" earlier in the year, impacting availability and customer experience.
"We do not expect to re-establish our Q2 2025 position until Q2 of 2026," Leighton stated, while confirming that the worst of the disruption is now behind the company. He thanked colleagues for their hard work and customers for their patience during the challenging period.
The December fuel discount represents a clear attempt by Asda to win back customer loyalty and provide tangible savings during the expensive festive season, directly addressing some of the criticisms levelled at its forecourt operations.
