The BMW M3 Touring Competition is here, and it's the estate car that enthusiasts have been waiting for. With a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six engine producing 503bhp and 479lb ft of torque, it can sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.6 seconds. That's faster than many supercars, yet it can still carry a family of four and their luggage.
Design and Practicality
The Touring version adds a long roof and a large tailgate, giving it a 500-litre boot with the rear seats up, expanding to 1,510 litres when folded. It's based on the latest 3 Series, but with M-specific bodywork including wider arches, a aggressive front bumper, and quad exhausts. The rear diffuser and roof spoiler are functional, aiding aerodynamics.
Performance and Handling
Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox and M xDrive system. This allows for immense grip and traction, making it a capable all-weather machine. The suspension features adaptive dampers, and there's a 4WD Sport mode that sends more power to the rear for a playful character. A 2WD mode is also available, but only with stability control off.
According to BMW, the M3 Touring Competition is the first M3 estate ever produced, and it's designed to compete with the Audi RS4 Avant and Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate. It weighs 1,865kg, which is 90kg more than the saloon, but BMW claims the weight penalty is barely noticeable thanks to the chassis tuning.
Interior and Technology
Inside, it's typical M3: M-specific seats, steering wheel with red M1/M2 buttons, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 14.9-inch infotainment screen running BMW's latest iDrive 8. The rear seats are comfortable for adults, and there are ISOFIX points for child seats. The boot is square and deep, with a low loading lip.
Standard equipment includes 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloy wheels, M Compound brakes, adaptive LED headlights, and a Harman Kardon sound system. Options include carbon ceramic brakes, a carbon fibre roof (not available on Touring), and M Driver's Package which raises the top speed to 155mph (standard is 155mph limited).
Pricing and Availability
Prices start at £98,000 in the UK, making it a significant premium over the saloon. Deliveries began in late 2022, and demand has been strong. It's a niche product, but for those who need practicality without sacrificing performance, it's the perfect choice.
In a recent review, Top Gear magazine described it as "the ultimate Q-car" – a wolf in sheep's clothing that can embarrass sports cars while collecting the kids from school. The M3 Touring Competition is a testament to BMW's engineering prowess and a love letter to driving enthusiasts who have families.
