Homebase Opens New Garden Centre in Oldbury Amid Restructure
Homebase opens new Garden Centre in Oldbury

Homebase has delivered a significant update concerning its presence in Oldbury, confirming the launch of a new specialist garden centre in the West Midlands just in time for the festive season.

A New Chapter for the Oldbury Store

The DIY and home improvement chain has announced it will open a brand-new and exclusive 'Garden Centres by Homebase' at the Oldbury Green Retail Park. The exciting launch is scheduled for Friday, 14th November 2025.

This new venture will occupy the former Homebase unit at the retail park, signalling a strategic shift for the site. The company teased the opening with a social media post stating, "BIG NEWS, Oldbury! We're growing something exciting...".

Shoppers can expect to find a range of seasonal products, including fresh Real Christmas Trees, alongside all the essential gardening supplies needed to maintain a vibrant garden during the winter months.

Background of Change and Challenges

This new opening comes against a backdrop of significant restructuring for the 40-year-old retailer. Last November, the company was sold to retail group CDS Superstores International Limited in a rescue deal.

This agreement secured up to 1,600 jobs and 70 stores. However, it left the future of an additional 2,000 workers and 49 shops uncertain after administrators from Teneo were appointed.

CDS, which owns The Range, subsequently bought the majority of Homebase's stores out of administration, including the brand itself. The remaining 49 stores have continued to trade as normal while administrators seek a buyer.

Looking to the Future

Homebase's recent struggles have been well-documented. The chain reported a substantial loss of £84.2 million last year, attributed to the post-pandemic decline in consumer confidence and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Damian McGloughlin, Chief Executive of Homebase, described the last three years as "incredibly challenging" for the DIY sector. Despite efforts to restructure the business and seek fresh investment, the company had to take the difficult step of appointing administrators.

Homebase has encouraged customers to "keep your eyes peeled for even more exciting Homebase openings coming soon," indicating that this new garden centre format could be part of a broader strategy for the brand under its new ownership.
