Discount supermarket giant Lidl has announced a major expansion drive, with plans to open 19 new stores across the UK within the next eight weeks. This significant push includes a prominent new location in Birmingham and is set to create up to 640 new jobs.
Midlands Gains and a Landmark Birmingham Location
The expansion will see two new stores open in the Midlands region in the coming weeks. A major new Lidl supermarket is being constructed at Kingstanding Circle in Birmingham, on the site of the former Kingstanding Shopping Centre. This location is a landmark site passed by thousands of drivers daily. A second store is scheduled to open in Burntwood, near Lichfield, Staffordshire.
This wave of openings is part of Lidl's aggressive growth strategy, following the milestone of opening its 1,000th store last year. The company aims to add approximately 40 new sites in the financial year ending February 28.
Multi-Million Pound Investment and Market Ambition
Alongside the new stores, Lidl is investing £43 million in refurbishing more than 70 existing shops nationwide. The upgrades will feature new till systems, larger freezers for a broader product range, and new energy-saving technology. This includes chillers using natural refrigerants and intelligent lighting systems designed to cut electricity consumption.
Richard Taylor, Chief Real Estate Officer at Lidl GB, stated: "We're starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve. With this push, we're set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market."
Strong Momentum and Christmas Success
Lidl, currently Britain's sixth-largest grocery chain, has been making significant market share gains. Industry experts from Worldpanel suggest it could overtake rival Morrisons for fifth place in the coming months if its current momentum holds.
The retailer enjoyed a robust Christmas trading period, with sales surging by 10%. This performance generated over £1.1 billion in turnover in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve, underscoring its growing appeal to British shoppers.
