Lidl opens two new stores in January 2026

Discount supermarket giant Lidl has kicked off 2026 with a significant expansion, confirming the launch of two brand-new stores this January. The retailer has revealed the exact locations and opening dates for the latest additions to its growing UK portfolio.

Grand Openings in Burntwood and Brough

The first of the two new supermarkets welcomed its first customers in Burntwood, Staffordshire, on Wednesday, January 15, 2026. Shoppers in the area can now visit the freshly opened store. The second location will follow just a week later, with a store in Brough, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, set to open its doors on January 22, 2026.

To celebrate the launches, Lidl is planning special events for the opening days. Customers visiting the new stores can expect to sample complimentary food items, and the chain has also promised that prizes will be up for grabs.

Multi-Million Pound Investment in Existing Stores

Alongside its new store openings, Lidl has announced ambitious plans to renovate more than 70 of its existing supermarkets across the country. This forms part of a substantial £43 million investment aimed at enhancing the shopping experience.

The comprehensive upgrades will include the installation of new checkout areas and an expansion of freezer capacity. These improvements are designed to allow stores to stock a wider and more diverse range of products for customers.

A Nationwide Push for Growth

The openings in Burntwood and Brough are just the beginning of a much larger rollout. Lidl has confirmed that a new store in Kingstanding, Birmingham, is also in the pipeline. These three locations are part of a broader strategy to launch a total of 19 new Lidl stores over the next eight weeks.

Richard Taylor, Chief Real Estate Officer at Lidl GB, commented on the aggressive expansion plans. "We're starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve," he said. "With this push, we're set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market."
