M&S to Shut 14 In-Store Cafés Nationwide in 2026 Shake-Up
M&S Closing 14 In-Store Cafés in 2026 Shake-Up

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has confirmed a significant operational change, with plans to close 14 of its in-store cafés across the United Kingdom in 2026. This decision marks a disappointing development for shoppers who frequently enjoy a hot drink or snack while browsing the retailer's aisles.

Impact on Shoppers and Store Locations

The closures will affect multiple regions, including branches in Staffordshire, Cheshire, Yorkshire, Kent, and Suffolk. Specific locations set to lose their cafeterias include Crawley in West Sussex, Dunblane in Stirling, Scotland, and Congleton in Cheshire, among others. This move is part of a broader shake-up aimed at reallocating space to enhance product variety and improve the overall shopping experience.

Statement from M&S Management

Katie Whelan, the M&S regional manager in Congleton, addressed the closure, stating, "We know many of our customers want to be able to shop a wider range of M&S Food. That's why, after reviewing our Congleton store, we are re-purposing the café space in-store to provide more product choice and improve the shopping experience." She acknowledged the potential disappointment, adding, "We understand this will be disappointing news for some of our customers; however, our teams will continue working hard to serve them in-store."

Strategic Shift and Fashion Initiative

This café closure announcement coincides with M&S launching The Love That Drop, a new monthly capsule programme designed to revolutionize how the retailer delivers fashion. The initiative focuses on accelerating the process of bringing trend-led styles from suppliers to shop floors, aligning with M&S's transformation strategy for growth in Fashion, Home, and Beauty sectors.

Maddy Evans, Director of M&S Woman, explained, "The Love That Drop is a step forward in how we deliver modern, trend-led pieces for our customers. Each edit is tightly curated, outfit-driven and designed to feel fresh, relevant and fashion-forward while staying true to the quality and value customers expect from M&S." She emphasized that this programme aims to strengthen style perceptions, increase efficiency, and drive online growth.
