M&S Shoppers Criticize New 18p Per Banana Charge in UK Stores
Angry shoppers are voicing strong criticism against Marks and Spencer after the supermarket chain implemented a new pricing policy for bananas, charging 18p per individual fruit instead of the previous 90p per kilogram. M&S, which operates multiple branches in Birmingham, defends the change, stating that it does not constitute a price increase when calculated based on average weight.
Customer Reactions and Concerns
On social media platform X.com, one shopper expressed frustration, suggesting, "Best way around it is to take the biggest banana from each bunch." Another user replied, highlighting potential issues: "There were also lots of loose smaller single bananas left on the shelf. Can’t help thinking they will have more wastage." A spokesperson for M&S responded, emphasizing transparency: "When customers pick bananas from the shelf, they know exactly what they’ll pay at the till."
Expert Analysis on Pricing Fairness
Shopping expert Sarah-Jane Outten from MyVoucherCodes provided insight into the consumer perspective. She noted, "Some customers might feel that no two bananas are the same, so paying by weight seems fairer. Those who get to the supermarket as the produce arrives can pick the biggest, while late-night buyers could end up paying the same for less fruit." However, she acknowledged a potential benefit: "But it does make it easier to keep track of what your trolley is costing."
M&S Launches Jersey Royal Potatoes
This controversy emerges in the same week that M&S has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first UK retailer to introduce its highly anticipated Jersey Royal potatoes. This launch is made possible through a longstanding 10-year partnership with the Le Maistre family, who have been farming on Jersey since 1841. The family is led by sixth-generation farmer Philip Le Maistre, working alongside his son Phil Jnr and brother Peter, supported by a team of local experts.
Harry Wilder, Senior Agronomist at M&S, commented on the seasonal offering: "The arrival of Jersey Royals in our stores is always a highlight for us, signalling that spring and the very best of British produce season is here. Our relationship with our growers is what makes this possible and the Le Maistre family's passion and expertise, passed down through generations, is remarkable. Their hard work means we can be the first to bring these delicious, seasonal potatoes to our customers."
The new season Jersey Royal potatoes are currently available in 80 M&S stores across the UK, with plans to expand to over 100 stores starting April 1, just in time for the Easter period.
