Poundland has officially announced that its store located at Two Saints Retail Park in Ormskirk is set to close permanently at the end of March. In preparation for the shutdown, the discount retailer has launched a clearance sale, offering customers discounts of up to 40% on selected items.
Reasons Behind the Closure
A spokesperson for Poundland explained to the Daily Express that the closure is due to an inability to reach an agreement with the landlord. "We recently announced that the Ormskirk store was to close after we were unable to agree terms with the landlord, who, we assume, has other plans for the unit," the spokesperson stated.
Broader Store Closures Across the UK
This closure is part of a larger trend, with seven Poundland locations scheduled to shut in February alone. Stores in Crayford, Nottingham, and Urmston are among those closing, following recent shutdowns in Chichester and Feltham last Sunday. Additional sites that have already ceased operations include Winton in Dorset and Chichester, as well as Feltham.
A Poundland spokesman clarified, "This particular store is closing because we’ve been unable to secure terms that would allow us to keep trading there, not one of the 68 shops we identified for closure in the UK as part of the plan."
Restructuring and Future Plans
The company is undergoing a significant restructuring effort, aiming to reduce its store network from 800 to between 650 and 700 locations over time. "Where we can, we’re combining locations where we have two stores into one," the spokesman added.
Impact on Distribution Centers
As part of this restructuring, Poundland has also closed its frozen and digital distribution centre in Darton, South Yorkshire, and its national distribution centre in Springvale, Bilston, West Midlands. However, distribution centres in Wigan and Harlow continue to operate normally.
Customers in Ormskirk are encouraged to take advantage of the clearance sale to secure bargains before the store's final day of business at the end of March.
