Poundland Closes Basildon Store Two Weeks Early Amid Lease Dispute
A major UK high street retailer has unexpectedly shut one of its stores two weeks ahead of its planned closure date. Poundland, which operates multiple locations including in Birmingham, has closed its shop in the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon earlier than anticipated.
Lease Agreement Issues Lead to Sudden Closure
The store was originally scheduled to close on March 13 after Poundland failed to reach an agreement on lease terms with the landlord. However, customers arriving on the morning of Tuesday, February 24, found notices from law firm Howard Kennedy posted on the windows, indicating the immediate closure.
According to Poundland, the Basildon shop was due to shut on March 13 because ongoing lease terms could not be agreed upon with the property owner. The landlord's legal representative stated that Poundland's "right to occupy the premises had come to an end" and emphasized there was "no dispute" between the parties.
Customer Reactions and Community Impact
Shoppers expressed disappointment at the sudden closure. One customer told local media: "I'm pretty gutted it's closing. It is a big blow, especially due to the cost of living nowadays. A lot of people cannot afford things. They don't have the money to save and many of them are on a budget. They can't afford expensive stuff."
Another added: "I know a lot of people do use it and it's a shame. It is a blow to the town. This store was useful for a lot of people. It is a shame. There are only clothes shops here."
Company Response and Staff Relocation
A Poundland spokesperson said: "We apologise to customers for the unexpected closure of the Basildon store which was out of our control." The company clarified that despite rumors, there were no staff redundancies at the store.
Staff members have been temporarily relocated from the Basildon location to the Pitsea store while arrangements are made to clear remaining stock. The closure occurred as Poundland was set to begin an "orderly clearance sale" on Tuesday.
This development comes amid a series of closures affecting the retail chain, highlighting ongoing challenges in the high street sector.
