Belong Crewe is highlighting the importance of community support, social connection, and access to expert guidance as part of Dementia Action Week. The Brookhouse Drive care village is encouraging local people to make use of the support available for those caring for someone with dementia, as the national campaign raises awareness of the condition and the pressures faced by families and friends.
There are approximately 1.8 million unpaid dementia carers in England, typically providing the equivalent of four working days a week (28.5 hours) in care and support. Around one third provide more than 100 hours of care each week.
Expert Guidance Available
Caroline Anthony, general manager at Belong Crewe, said: "In our experience, there are many, many families in the community muddling through the complexities of supporting a loved one with dementia. It can feel incredibly isolating and lonely, but our message is that you don’t have to go at it alone. Advice and guidance are out there, even when a formal diagnosis is yet to be made, so this Dementia Action Week, be sure to explore the options and get in touch."
Community Support Services
Belong Crewe’s community support includes its monthly B’s Café, a memory café offering free coffee and conversation, giving carers a chance to connect while their loved ones take part in engaging activities. The sessions also provide access to Belong’s Admiral Nurses, delivered in partnership with Dementia UK, offering specialist advice, support with assessments, attendance at meetings, and guidance on accessing services and finance.
Carers’ loved ones can also join Belong Crewe’s experiences programme, including arts and crafts, exercise classes, intergenerational activities, live entertainment, and outings, either free or for a small charge. Specialist day care and home care are also available through Experience Days and Belong at Home Crewe.
Caroline added: "It’s important to us that everyone has that support network around them - it's about caring for the carers. Even if it’s just them popping in for a brew, help is on the doorstep." More information is available at www.belong.org.uk or enquiries@belong.org.uk.
