Aldi has been named the cheapest supermarket in the UK for April, with a basket of 96 items costing £172.77, according to a report by consumer group Which?. This makes it £2.43 cheaper than its closest rival, Lidl, where the same items averaged £175.20 with Lidl Plus prices.

Monthly Price Comparison

Every month, Which? compares prices at eight major UK supermarkets: Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Waitrose. In April, Aldi took the top spot, followed closely by Lidl. Without loyalty discounts, Lidl's average price was £175.29, placing it third overall.

Asda came fourth with an average price of £197.91 for the smaller basket. At the other end of the spectrum, Waitrose was the most expensive, with the same 96 items costing £242.04 on average.

Loyalty Discounts Impact

Sainsbury's offered loyalty discounts on 21 items in the small basket, Tesco on 23, and Lidl on two. Which? calculated average costs for both members and non-members to reflect these differences.

Larger Basket Analysis

The analysis also included a longer list of 221 items, featuring branded goods not typically stocked by discounters Aldi and Lidl. For this basket, Asda was the cheapest for the second consecutive month, with an average cost of £567.56.

Tesco with a Clubcard came second at £576.88, followed by Morrisons (both with and without More) at £590.07 and £590.50 respectively. Sainsbury's with Nectar was slightly more expensive at £590.74, while Sainsbury's without a loyalty card was the second most expensive for the longer list. Waitrose remained the priciest, with a big shop averaging £659.58, which is £92.02 more than Asda.
