West Midlands Business Scheme Fuels Growth, Faces March 2026 End
Calls to Continue West Midlands Business Growth Scheme

Calls are intensifying for the continuation of a highly successful business support programme in the West Midlands, which has been a catalyst for growth for thousands of local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Business Growth West Midlands Investment Readiness Programme is credited with providing vital advice and connections, but its current funding is scheduled to conclude in March 2026.

From Kitchen Table to Supermarket Shelves

The programme's impact is powerfully illustrated by the story of Composty, an eco-firm based in Kingswinford. Run by husband-and-wife team Matt and Helen Guest, the company produces biodegradable sponges and compostable cleaning cloths.

Matt Guest, who left his teaching job to focus on the business, explained the challenge they faced. "We were bootstrapped like a lot of other growth start-ups," he said. "We had the opportunity, but we didn't know where to go for additional funding or how to model financial forecasts correctly."

This is where the Investment Readiness Programme intervened, providing specialist financial advice and crucial introductions to alternative funding sources. The result has been dramatic: Composty is now on track to sell its millionth product, has achieved sales of £500,000, and is in talks to get its products onto the shelves of major supermarkets.

A Proven Track Record of Success

The programme, which has supported 2,000 SMEs across the region, focuses on providing advice, financial education, and direct networking opportunities with potential investors. Its effectiveness is undeniable.

Catherine Bray, West Midlands Regional Director of Oxford Innovation Advice, confirmed the scheme's outstanding results. "More than £4.2m has been successfully raised by growing firms thanks to the BGWM Investment Readiness Programme," she stated. "This proves without doubt we have developed an initiative that works and helps companies master a topic that many struggle with."

Ahead of the programme's potential closure, a major event is set to take place. The Business Funding Summit 2025 will be held at The Eastside Rooms in Birmingham on Tuesday, November 25. More than 150 SMEs and start-ups are expected to attend this final major networking event to connect with specialist advisers and funders.

The Fight for the Future

With the programme's funding deadline looming, beneficiaries like the Guests are making a direct appeal to the government and the West Midlands Combined Authority to secure its future.

Matt Guest was emphatic in his praise, calling it "one of the best business support offers we've come across." He added, "We'd love for it to continue after its funding comes to a close in March 2026."

There is hope for a reprieve. Catherine Bray indicated that due to the significant positive impact, efforts are underway to secure a new funding package. "We're hoping to bid for a new package that will see Investment Readiness carry on for a few more years," she said.

For now, the business community awaits a decision, hoping that a scheme that has made "such a difference" will continue to fuel the economic engine of the West Midlands.
