Diplomatic Advisory Hub Launched in Leeds to Support UK Small Businesses

A significant new initiative has been launched in Leeds, designed to provide small and medium-sized enterprises across the United Kingdom with crucial expert geopolitical insights and strategic advice. The Diplomatic Advisory Hub represents a pioneering joint venture between the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the British Chambers of Commerce.

Strategic Partnership for Economic Growth

The hub was officially inaugurated at the factory of Leeds-based jukebox manufacturer Sound Leisure, a family-run business that exports approximately two-thirds of its products overseas. The launch event featured Foreign Office director of economic growth, Tammy Reynolds, who highlighted the government's commitment to bolstering business support.

This innovative scheme will see experienced diplomats seconded directly into the British Chambers of Commerce network. The hub will be led by Richard Oppenheim, a former ambassador with extensive diplomatic experience in complex markets across the Middle East and Japan, along with multilateral expertise from the United Nations, European Union, and Commonwealth engagements.

Comprehensive Support for Millions of SMEs

The Diplomatic Advisory Hub aims to serve the vast network of more than five million small and medium-sized enterprises operating throughout the UK. All these businesses will gain access to timely strategic advice covering multiple critical areas for international trade success.

The service will provide essential guidance on:

  • Understanding and navigating new international regulations
  • Developing effective responses to geopolitical shocks and disruptions
  • Anticipating emerging trends in global trade patterns
  • Expanding confidently into new international markets

Government and Business Leadership Perspectives

Foreign Office Minister Seema Malhotra emphasized the initiative's importance, stating: "We are stepping up our support to businesses through our newly launched Diplomatic Advisory Hub, which will bring together the British Chambers of Commerce's extensive business network with expert advice from British diplomats. In an increasingly contested world, it's more important than ever for Government and businesses to work together to navigate the intersections between geopolitics and commerce."

Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, added: "Trade is the fastest way of growing the economy. The Diplomatic Advisory hub will help more SMEs navigate the complex world of geopolitics, giving them the knowledge and certainty to expand into new markets. This unique partnership with the Foreign Office shows how government and business working together can drive forward growth."

Regional Impact and Immediate Engagement

James Mason, chief executive of West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, noted the historical context of regional exports, saying: "Firms in West and North Yorkshire have been exporting first-class goods and services for hundreds of years. In times of uncertainty, the Diplomatic Advisory Hub will give small businesses the support they need so they can carry on this proud tradition."

The hub has already demonstrated its immediate value by briefing more than 600 businesses during its launch week about the evolving situation in the Middle East and its specific implications for their operations. This rapid engagement underscores the practical, real-world support the initiative promises to deliver to UK businesses navigating increasingly complex international landscapes.
