Amazon Announces Shutdown of King of Meat Game with Full Refunds
Amazon has confirmed it will be shutting down the servers for its video game King of Meat on April 9, 2026, and will issue full refunds to all customers who purchased the title. This decision comes less than a year after the game's launch, as it failed to achieve the player base Amazon had anticipated.
Game Fails to Meet Expectations Despite Major Promotion
Amazon had high hopes for King of Meat, aiming for hundreds of thousands of players and investing significantly in marketing campaigns. The promotion included features at The Game Awards and a collaboration with popular YouTube personality MrBeast. However, the game struggled to gain traction in the competitive gaming market.
A statement from Amazon Game Studios explained, "Following the launch of King of Meat, it's been incredibly rewarding to watch the community enjoy this fun and chaotic world. Despite the creativity and innovation Glowmade brought to King of Meat, the game has unfortunately not found the audience we hoped for."
Refund Process and Server Closure Details
Refunds will be handled directly through the platforms where players bought the game, such as digital storefronts. In most cases, refunds will be processed automatically between February 24 and April 9, 2026. Players can continue to access and play all existing content until the servers officially close on April 9.
The developer, Glowmade, has confirmed that the game will be formally sunsetted on that date, after which it will no longer be playable. King of Meat was only released in October 2025, making its lifespan just four months before the shutdown announcement.
Community Reaction and Feedback
On Reddit, users shared mixed reactions to the news. One tester from the alpha phase commented, "Tested this game as part of their Alpha phase. It was just weird, it was almost like they'd spent so many resources building a game nobody would possibly want. Bizarre." Another user noted, "I got to test this game a long while back; they listened to none of the feedback about combat being far too basic and the puzzles sometimes feeling like people are progressing before you even have a clue what's going on."
This move highlights the challenges in the gaming industry, where even well-funded projects can struggle to sustain an audience. Amazon's decision to offer full refunds is seen as a customer-friendly gesture amid the disappointment of the game's closure.
