Chinese automotive giant Chery has introduced the new JAECOO 8, a flagship plug-in hybrid SUV that combines luxury with affordability. With prices starting from £45,500 for the Luxury trim and £47,500 for the Executive variant, the JAECOO 8 undercuts many premium rivals while offering a comprehensive standard warranty: seven years or 100,000 miles for the vehicle, plus eight years or 100,000 miles for the battery.
Design and Off-Road Capability
The JAECOO 8 is available in two seating configurations: the Luxury version features seven seats in a 2-3-2 layout, while the Executive model offers six seats with two captain's chairs in the middle row. Both variants are designed for off-road use, equipped with an adaptive all-terrain response system and hill-descent control. During a test on a challenging country estate circuit, the vehicle remained stable even on steep descents. It also includes settings for sand, mud, and snowy conditions, along with lockable differentials for tougher terrain.
The exterior retains the brand's signature waterfall grille, complemented by hidden door handles and full-width LED taillights. With a ground clearance that allows a wading depth of 600mm, the JAECOO 8 is both stylish and capable.
Luxurious Interior
The cabin is dominated by dual 12.3-inch displays that control most functions, including a Sony 14-speaker sound system, smartphone connectivity, and various apps. However, the touchscreen interface can be challenging to navigate initially, with menus that are not immediately intuitive. Other controls are logically placed, though the gear selector is positioned where the wiper stalk would normally be, which may not suit all drivers.
The Executive trim adds powered, massaging Nappa leather seats, with four heated, ventilated, and massaging captain's chairs. The cabin offers ample headroom and legroom, creating an airy and spacious environment.
Rapid Performance
The JAECOO 8 is powered by Chery's Super Hybrid System (SHS), combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a three-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) and twin electric motors. Total output is 428 PS and 580 Nm of torque, enabling both versions to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under six seconds. The all-wheel-drive system engages all motors during off-road driving, enhancing traction. On country roads, the vehicle feels stable, though some body lean is noticeable in corners. The ride is generally comfortable and quiet, isolating occupants from poor road surfaces.
Electric Range and Efficiency
As a plug-in hybrid, the JAECOO 8 offers an electric-only range of approximately 80 miles on a full charge, sufficient for most daily commutes without using petrol. Once the battery is depleted, official fuel economy is around 40-50 mpg, which is reasonable for a two-and-a-half-tonne seven-seater.
Practicality and Storage
Boot space is generous, with 738 litres available with the second row in place and a massive 2,021 litres with the rear seats folded. Additional storage includes a large centre console bin, multiple door bins, and under-floor compartments.
Verdict
The JAECOO 8 SHS-P is a well-rounded package that offers a choice between a seven-seat family vehicle and a six-seat luxury cruiser. It combines punchy hybrid performance, genuine off-road capability, and a seven-year warranty at a price that undercuts many rivals. While the infotainment system may require some adjustment, the spacious interior, high specification, and competitive pricing make it a compelling alternative in the luxury SUV segment.
