Welsh Laser Company Plays Pivotal Role in NASA's Artemis II Moon Mission

A laser technology company from South Wales has made significant contributions to NASA's Artemis II space mission, with their advanced equipment being utilized on the Orion spacecraft. Spectrum Technologies, based in Bridgend, designs and manufactures specialized laser systems that American engineering teams employ to label wiring on spacecraft and aircraft, including the critical Orion vehicle.

Complex Wiring Systems Require Precision Labeling

The Orion spacecraft contains approximately 20 miles of electrical wiring, consisting of 2,600 individual pieces that all required precise identification. Spectrum Technologies' lasers were used to mark each wire along its entire length at intervals of just a few inches with unique alphanumeric codes.

"Each wire must be marked with a unique code along its entire length," explained Peter Dickinson, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Spectrum Technologies. "This is extremely complex electrical wiring that all needs proper identification to prevent what would otherwise be a gigantic mess."

Global Leadership in Specialized Equipment

Dickinson emphasized that their labeling system represents the critical first step in producing the spacecraft's wiring harness, noting that Spectrum Technologies has established itself as the number one global provider for this specialist equipment and has set what he describes as "the global standard" in this field.

The company's laser technology has been incorporated into all Artemis program missions to date, and Dickinson confirmed that Spectrum Technologies' equipment will also be featured in the upcoming Artemis III mission, which aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972.

Company's Excitement About Space Exploration Milestones

The entire team at Spectrum Technologies has been closely following the Artemis program's progress with great enthusiasm. "The whole company has been watching what has been going on and we are all excited to be part of this pivotal moment of space exploration," Dickinson stated.

He reflected on his personal connection to space exploration, saying, "I remember as a teenager watching Apollo 11 landing on the moon. It is thrilling to be involved in this latest programme to take humans back to the moon."

Broader Applications in Space Exploration

Beyond the Artemis missions, Spectrum Technologies' laser systems have been deployed in various other space exploration endeavors. Their technology has been utilized in probes sent to Mars and in the Lucy spacecraft, which is currently on a 12-year mission to Jupiter with the objective of uncovering more information about the formation of our solar system.
