While many people are busy with festive preparations, the team at RSPCA Southport, Ormskirk and District Branch is focused on a different kind of Christmas countdown. Their priority is the 92 animals currently residing at their shelter, each hoping for the gift of a loving, permanent home.
A Shelter's Festive Focus: Care and Compassion
The branch, which is a separately registered and independently funded charity, does not receive government support or funding from the national RSPCA. It relies entirely on public donations, legacy gifts, and local fundraising efforts to operate. This winter, with 92 animals in care, the team is working tirelessly to ensure every creature is warm, healthy, and comforted.
Many of these animals have faced difficult pasts, including neglect, abandonment, or owners who could no longer look after them. The festive season, while joyful, often brings increased challenges for animal welfare organisations. Despite this, the shelter staff find hope in daily progress, such as a nervous cat beginning to trust or a shy dog gaining confidence.
Festive Fundraisers to Support the Animals
To raise crucial funds, the branch has organised several community events this December:
- Christmas Paws and Tours: Special guided tours of the shelter are scheduled for December 10 and 21, with slots at 2pm and 3pm. Visitors can meet some animals and learn about the shelter's work. Booking is essential on 01704 567624.
- Quiz Night at Ginger’s Bar & Grill: A festive quiz will take place on December 8 from 6.30pm at the Lord Street venue.
- Bingo Night at Corridor Bar & Eatery: An evening of bingo and festive cheer is planned for December 17 from 6.30pm, also on Lord Street.
Why Community Support is Vital
Running a shelter for 92 animals is a significant undertaking, especially with rising costs for food, bedding, veterinary care, and utilities. The charity's commitment to providing love and a promise of a better future for every animal is unwavering, but it cannot be sustained without community backing.
The shelter extends a heartfelt thank you to all its supporters—donors, adopters, volunteers, and event hosts—whose kindness ensures the animals feel warmth and love this Christmas while they wait for their forever families.
From all the staff, volunteers, and the 92 furry, whiskered, and waggy-tailed residents, the message is one of gratitude: your support truly changes lives.
