An Aberystwyth mother is embarking on a series of major triathlon challenges this summer to celebrate her daughter's journey and raise money for a charity that has supported her family.
Triathlete Takes on Tough Races
Triathlete Bridget Harpwood will compete in the Long Course Weekend in Tenby, taking on the full swim and bike events in June. She will then return later in the year for Ironman Wales 2026. Her younger daughter, Martha, will also participate in the Iron Kids event ahead of the main race. Bridget is fundraising for the Wish Fund, run by Hywel Dda Health Charities, which creates special experiences for children and young people living with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions.
Celebrating a Milestone
Bridget's daughter Elain, now 16, was born with a rare and complex heart condition, along with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. Over the years, the Wish Fund has helped provide memorable experiences for Elain and her family. Bridget said the challenge is a way of marking a major milestone. “We have been told on many occasions that it would be unlikely Elain would reach her teenage years. In March 2026, she turned 16, which is an incredible milestone for her and for us as a family. Living with this diagnosis has often been a heavy burden, so I wanted this challenge to celebrate her journey. I’m aiming to raise £100 for each year of her life so the Wish Fund can continue supporting families like ours.”
Charity Thanks Fundraiser
Nicola Llewellyn, head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, thanked Bridget for her efforts, saying the fundraising will help provide additional support and experiences for patients and families beyond core NHS services. Donations to Bridget’s fundraiser can be made online, with more information about the Wish Fund available via Hywel Dda Health Charities.
