POhWER Charity Seeks New Trustees to Expand Advocacy Reach Across UK
Advocacy charity POhWER seeks new trustees

A leading advocacy charity that started in Hertfordshire is looking to bring new trustees onto its board to help guide its future growth and support more communities nationwide.

Empowering Voices Across the Country

POhWER, established in Hertfordshire in 1996, is one of the United Kingdom's largest advocacy organisations. Its core mission is to empower individuals who struggle to be heard due to illness, disability, or social exclusion. The charity provides free, confidential, and independent services that help people understand their rights, have a say in life-changing decisions, and challenge unfair treatment.

In the past year alone, POhWER's advocates have supported over 45,000 people across England. Their work encompasses a wide range of statutory and community advocacy, including NHS Complaints Advocacy, Independent Mental Health Advocacy, and support under the Mental Capacity and Care Acts.

A Strategic Opportunity for New Trustees

The charity's board of trustees is now seeking new members to join during a pivotal period of development. Robert Templeton, Chair of the Board, stated it is an exciting time to become involved as the organisation explores its future direction and prepares to launch a new strategy in 2026.

"We are seeking trustees to support us as we look to grow and empower more people across the country to have a voice," Templeton said. "This is your chance to make a difference."

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to shape the future of a national charity, contribute to strategic planning, and help strengthen governance while championing the rights of vulnerable people.

Skills and Commitment Required

The board is keen to complement its existing skillset and is particularly interested in hearing from applicants with professional experience in:

  • Finance, especially financial oversight or charity finance at a board or senior level.
  • Human Resources, typically at an executive or board level.
  • Commissioning, audit and risk, or digital transformation.

The charity also values lived experience and welcomes individuals who share its core belief in everyone's right to be heard, bringing strategic insight and sound judgement.

Trustee roles require a commitment of approximately one day per month. This includes attending board and committee meetings, the AGM, and strategic away days. Appointments are for an initial three-year term, which can be extended to a maximum of six years. While most meetings are held online, around two in-person gatherings are expected each year.
