Bacup Community Unites for Special Fundraiser to Support Young Boy's Journey to Independence

The Bacup community is coming together for a special afternoon of entertainment to support a young boy's journey toward greater independence. Two-year-old Finnick Whittaker, affectionately known as "Finbo," was born premature at 27 weeks and diagnosed with cerebral palsy after experiencing severe brain damage. He spent 83 days in intensive care and contracted sepsis at just three weeks old.

Despite initial medical predictions that his chances of walking or talking were 'slim to none,' Finnick has proven to be a determined and chatty toddler. To help him gain the physical independence he needs as he approaches school age, his family and friends are raising £8,000 for a specialized 'Tiny Trax' electric wheelchair.

Fundraising Event Details and Goals

While Finnick currently uses a "Wizzybug" wheelchair provided by a charity, that equipment is only suitable until he turns five. The funds raised from this event will help ensure he has a larger, permanent wheelchair, which he needs to play and move independently with his peers. A lively "Brains, Bakes and Bingo" fundraising event is planned, promising a mix of afternoon fun and local treats, with all proceeds going directly to the Finding Finbo’s Footsteps campaign.

Location: Bacup Cricket Club.

Date: Sunday, March 29.

Time: 1pm.

Cost: £10 per person, which includes a serving of pie and peas.

Format: Teams of up to eight people are encouraged to join for a series of quiz questions and bingo rounds. Local businesses and supporters have donated a variety of prizes to be won throughout the afternoon, including:

  • Four personal training sessions with Katie Frain PT.
  • A Mother’s Zen voucher.
  • Millie’s Cookies vouchers.

The family is inviting everyone to bring their friends, family, and competitive spirit to help reach the £8,000 goal. The fundraising will continue later this year with a 12-mile "Fundraising 4 Finbo" walk scheduled for October 18, 2026. The trek will take supporters from Blackburn Hospital to Burnley NICU—the location where Finnick spent his first months of life.
