Birmingham Charity Makes Urgent Plea for Unused Bicycle Donations
Birmingham-based charity The Bike Project has launched an urgent appeal to local residents, asking them to donate any unwanted bicycles that may be sitting unused in garages, sheds, or homes. The organization refurbishes donated bikes and provides them to refugees and people seeking asylum in the city, but current demand is outstripping supply.
Critical Need for Transportation Independence
Research conducted by The Bike Project reveals a stark reality: four out of every five refugees regularly face the difficult choice between purchasing essential items and accessing public transportation. This transport poverty creates significant barriers to rebuilding lives in a new community.
Since opening its Balsall Heath workshop in 2019, the charity has already supported more than 4,100 refugees with refurbished bicycles. However, with demand continuing to rise steadily, the organization needs more donations to help those currently waiting.
Transformative Impact of Simple Donations
Lizzie Kenyon, Chief Executive of The Bike Project, emphasized the urgent nature of the appeal: "We urgently need more bike donations in Birmingham. Right now, there are refugees waiting for a bike that could help them access education, essential services, and community — but we simply don't have enough to meet the need."
"Most people have an unwanted bike sitting at home," Kenyon continued. "Donating it is a simple act that can completely transform someone's life. A bike provides freedom, dignity and independence at a time when refugees are starting again with very little."
More Than Just Transportation
The impact of bicycle donations extends far beyond basic mobility. One refugee recently told the charity: "For refugees who arrive with nothing, a bike is more than a physical object. It is independence, dignity, connection, and hope. It opens doors — to education, to appointments, to community, to joy."
Beyond providing practical transportation solutions, donated bicycles contribute significantly to improved mental and physical health for recipients, offering both exercise and increased social connection opportunities.
Donation Requirements and Workshop Success
The Bike Project particularly needs adult bicycles in working or repairable condition, though they welcome donations of all types. Ideal donations should be rust-free with working brakes and gears, and have no cracks or dents in the frame.
"Our Birmingham workshop has supported 4,100 refugees since 2019, but there are more people trying to rebuild their lives to support," Kenyon explained. "We need the public's help to ensure no one is left isolated because they cannot afford to travel."
The charity's appeal highlights how a simple, unused item gathering dust in a Birmingham home can become a lifeline for someone rebuilding their life in the city, providing not just transportation but hope and connection to essential services and community.
