A Bristol homeowner is preparing to create what could be the United Kingdom's most spectacular domestic Christmas light display, all in support of military veterans.
From 150,000 to 235,000 Lights for a Cause
Richard Iles, who lives at 58 Church Road, Winterbourne Down, is taking his already impressive festive display to extraordinary new heights for Christmas 2025. Following last year's successful effort of 150,000 lights that raised over £15,000 for the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, Richard plans to add a further 85,000 bulbs this year.
This ambitious expansion will bring the total to a staggering 235,000 lights, potentially making it the largest, or certainly one of the largest, residential Christmas light displays in the entire country.
A Personal Connection to Veterans' Support
Richard's dedication to the cause stems from his deep respect for military veterans. He travels to Normandy each year for the D-Day commemorations and has become very familiar with the Taxi Charity's work. After attending their veterans' Christmas lunch in 2024, he felt inspired to continue his support.
"Supporting the Taxi Charity means a great deal to me," Richard said. "Their unwavering commitment to veterans is inspiring, and I'm honoured to play a small part in helping them continue that vital work."
A Community Effort Behind the Spectacle
Richard was quick to highlight that such an ambitious project is not a solo endeavour. He expressed immense gratitude for the sponsors who support the display year after year, and particularly praised his father-in-law's tireless efforts.
"I'm also hugely grateful to my incredible father-in-law, who works tirelessly alongside me, often in the cold and rain, late into the night, to build, test and perfect every part of the display," Richard shared. "His dedication is what brings these lights to life."
Paul Cook, vice chairman of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, echoed this sentiment, describing the effort as "truly Herculean" and expressing the charity's gratitude for Richard's continued support.
The official switch-on for this breathtaking display is scheduled for 6pm on Saturday, November 29, 2025. The lights will remain illuminated 24 hours a day until Twelfth Night, offering a continuous spectacle for visitors.
