Cardiff Hospice Seeks Heroes for 2026 Firewalk and Marathon Walkathon
Cardiff Hospice Calls for 2026 Firewalk and Walkathon Heroes

Cardiff's City Hospice is issuing a rallying cry to local residents, urging them to become 'Hospice Heroes' in the new year by taking on a sponsored challenge. The charity aims to kickstart 2026 with a bang through two major fundraising events designed to support its crucial work.

Walk on Fire for a Vital Cause

Returning in March 2026, the Firewalk, sponsored by Keen Insurance, promises an unforgettable test of nerve. Participants will be guided by expert instructors as they walk barefoot over a bed of glowing embers, stepping far outside their comfort zones for charity.

One of the fifteen people who braved the flames last year described the experience. "The adrenaline, the cheers, the sense of achievement - the Firewalk pushed me far beyond my comfort zone," they said. "I walked away feeling proud, inspired and honoured to support City Hospice."

Take on a Marathon Trek Across the Capital

For those preferring a longer endurance test, the Walkathon returns on March 21. This extraordinary challenge involves a 26-mile hike – equivalent to a full marathon – along the Taff Trail from Cyfarthfa Castle to Castell Coch.

Fundraisers can choose to walk in memory of a loved one or to honour healthcare workers. A participant from last year's event, which saw 18 people take part, shared their motivation. "There were times when my legs wanted to quit," they recalled. "But the cheers from fellow walkers and knowing we were fundraising for such an important cause kept me going."

Double the Participants, Double the Impact

Mac Smith, fundraising and events manager at City Hospice, emphasised the perfect timing of a new year's resolution. "A simple 'new year, new me' resolution could make a real difference in our community," Smith stated. The charity has an ambitious goal for 2026: to double the number of participants in both events.

All funds raised will enable City Hospice to continue providing its specialised services across the Welsh capital. This includes:

  • Home-based palliative care for patients with life-limiting illnesses.
  • Essential counselling support.
  • Bereavement support for families.

"Whether you're walking in memory of a loved one or taking on the Firewalk as a personal challenge," Smith added, "every step helps ensure patients and their families across the city receive the care and support they need."
