Starlight & Ravensburger Deliver 7,000+ Toys to UK Hospitals
Charity delivers 7,000+ toys to UK hospitals for children

The UK's leading healthcare play charity, Starlight, has delivered a major boost to children's hospital wards through a significant new partnership with toy company Ravensburger.

A Vital Delivery for Young Patients

Starlight visited the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford to distribute essential toys aimed at supporting babies and children undergoing medical treatment. This delivery marks the start of a nationwide rollout, with more than 7,000 Ravensburger toys from its Play+ baby and toddler range, alongside items for older children, set to be distributed across the UK.

The resources, which include interactive books, educational toys, games, puzzles, and craft kits, have been specially selected by Starlight's play experts. They are designed to complement the charity's existing play boxes, which are a cornerstone of emotional and educational support for young patients.

The Critical Role of Play in Healthcare

Starlight's play boxes are far more than just a distraction. They are a vital clinical resource for hospital play teams, used to soothe, calm, and prepare children for often daunting treatments. Research from the charity reveals a stark reality: 71% of UK hospitals do not have a budget for play, and the majority of health play professionals state they are completely dependent on Starlight for resources and support.

The benefits of therapeutic play are well-documented. It significantly reduces children's anxiety and trauma associated with medical procedures. This reduction can, in turn, decrease the need for sedation, shorten hospital stays, lower the risk of future mental health issues, and even reduce costs and inefficiencies for the NHS.

Partners in Play: Voices from the Frontline

Jonny Wright, Director of Income Generation and Engagement at Starlight, expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership: "We're thrilled to partner with Ravensburger and bring their Play+ range to children and families who need it most. This wonderful partnership will significantly boost the resources we provide." He emphasised that "play is not just fun — it's an essential part of healthcare", crucial for preparing children for treatment and aiding their recovery.

Jo Pinney, Health Play Specialist Team Manager at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, highlighted the direct impact: "Play is a vital part of a child’s hospital experience. Thanks to Starlight and Ravensburger, our team can provide engaging, therapeutic play resources that make a real difference during a very stressful time."

Katy Fletcher, Head of Marketing and Product Development at Ravensburger, added: "Starlight’s work in shining a light on the vital role of play in healthcare is truly inspiring. We share that commitment to the power of play and are delighted to support the charity’s work. It's fantastic to know we can play our part in making hospital experiences more playful."

Beyond supplying toys, Starlight also provides essential training and shares best practice with the wider clinical community, ensuring the long-term emotional wellbeing and development of children in healthcare settings across the country.
