The Sunshine Fund has kicked off 2026 by celebrating a successful festive fundraising campaign, revealing that a total of £8,233.29 was raised to support local children with disabilities and terminal illnesses.
Festive Spirit Undampened by Burglary
Throughout December, the charity operated its free, fully accessible Santa Bus in Newcastle City Centre and visited SEND schools. The campaign faced a significant setback when a burglary at the Stagecoach depot targeted the charity's bucket collections. This selfish act forced the suspension of the usual annual on-the-bus collections.
However, the incident galvanised the community. Despite the challenges, £7,029.37 was still raised from bucket collections at the Santa Bus and on buses where collections could proceed. Following the break-in, an online appeal brought in a further £1,203.92, leading to the impressive final total.
The charity expressed profound gratitude to Stagecoach staff and the generous North East public, whose donations ensure all funds stay within the region to change children's lives.
A Packed 2026 Calendar of Events
With the new year underway, The Sunshine Fund has unveiled a full calendar of fundraising challenges and events, offering numerous ways for the public to get involved.
Secure Your Great North Run Spot
This week, the charity is offering a chance to bypass the ballot for the iconic Great North Run. A limited number of guaranteed charity spaces are available for a £50 registration fee. Runners are asked to pledge a minimum of £300 in sponsorship to fund life-changing equipment.
Sunshine Run 5K Returns for 23rd Year
For those seeking a shorter challenge, the popular Sunshine Run 5K is back. It will take place on Wednesday, 17 June along Newcastle's Quayside. Entry costs £27, which directly benefits local children, with additional fundraising welcomed but not mandatory.
Kielder Trek and Chillingham Castle Terror
Adventure-seekers can choose a 26-mile circular trek around Kielder Water on Friday, 1 May, coinciding with the location's 100th-anniversary celebrations. Entry is £39 with a £100 fundraising target.
Alternatively, thrill-seekers can join an exclusive, private ghost tour at the UK's most haunted castle, Chillingham Castle, on Sunday, 25 October. Tickets cost £65, with all proceeds supporting the charity's work.
Organise Your Own Fundraiser
If these events don't appeal, the charity encourages supporters to organise their own fundraising challenges. Those interested can contact the team at hello@thesunshinefund.org to discuss ideas and support.
The Sunshine Fund looks forward to announcing its final Christmas total and sharing stories of the difference these vital donations make to North East families.
