Bedfordshire Couple's Festive Lights Aim for £50k Hospice Milestone
Christmas lights display in Broom targets £50k hospice total

A Bedfordshire couple's dazzling Christmas lights have once again transformed their home into a beacon of festive cheer, all in the name of a vital local cause.

A Winter Wonderland for a Worthy Cause

For the sixth consecutive year, Paul and Anne Nicholas have illuminated their property at 93 High Street, Broom, creating a spectacular winter wonderland to support Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice. The official switch-on, performed by Charles Whitbread, drew a crowd of over 100 supporters to the now much-anticipated community event.

The dedication behind this year's display is particularly poignant. Despite Paul recovering from a back injury during the autumn, the couple, with help from friends and neighbours, ensured the lights shone brighter than ever. The display is open nightly from 5pm to 7.30pm until December 24, with visitors encouraged to park nearby and explore the garden for the full experience.

Creative Sparkle and Ambitious Goals

This year's highlights include a unique 'present tree' constructed entirely from wrapped gifts and a playful Grinch figure bursting through the decking, complete with a giant sack handmade by Anne. "We like to change the look every year so it never feels the same," Paul explained. "The Grinch is a bit of fun – Anne made the legs and body herself, and the sack is enormous."

The couple has set an ambitious fundraising target for this festive season. Having raised approximately £10,000 each year, they are now on the cusp of a significant milestone. "This year we’re aiming to reach a very special milestone – £50,000 raised in total since we first began," said Paul. "It would mean so much to us to hit that figure."

A Personal Mission of Giving Back

The motivation behind their efforts is deeply personal. "It’s our local charity, and the work they do is incredible," Paul added. "For us, it’s about giving back – it’s nice to be helpful, especially at Christmas." The display has become a cherished local tradition, attracting returning families and spreading joy, which Paul, who also volunteers as Santa locally, says makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Nick Burr, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice, praised the couple's ongoing commitment: "Anne and Paul’s Christmas light display is a real highlight of the festive season. Their creativity and generosity inspire us all, and the funds they raise help ensure we can continue to be there when it matters most."

With their home sparkling nightly and community spirit shining bright, the Nicholas family continues to embody the true meaning of Christmas giving.
