Bedale Dentist Prepares for Epic 4,000km Motorcycle Ride to Senegal
A dedicated dentist from Bedale is gearing up for an extraordinary 4,000-kilometer motorcycle journey from the Yorkshire Dales to West Africa, aiming to raise crucial funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity. This heartfelt mission is in memory of her beloved late mother, Catherine Robinson.
Ambitious Three-and-a-Half-Week Adventure
Teresa Robinson, aged 55, will commence her ambitious expedition on Friday, March 14, as part of a group of ten riders. The challenging route spans approximately 4,000 miles, taking her from her home in the Yorkshire Dales through France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, and Mauritania, before concluding in Dakar, Senegal. Along the way, she will navigate demanding mountain passes, expansive desert landscapes, and remote dirt roads.
Inspired by the legendary Paris-Dakar Rally, this once-in-a-lifetime adventure has long been a dream on Teresa's bucket list. She will be the sole female participant in the group, riding her Honda CRF 300 Rally dual sport bike, a vehicle she has trusted since beginning her motorcycling journey at age 21.
Supporting a Life-Saving Charity
The primary goal of this grueling trek is to generate vital funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, a charity that relies entirely on public donations to maintain its life-saving helicopter services. Teresa's motivation stems from a personal tragedy: her mother, Catherine, was airlifted to hospital by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance following a severe road traffic collision. The charity remained close to Catherine's heart, and her story was later featured on the BBC series Helicopter Heroes.
Reflecting on the challenge, Teresa shared, "Yorkshire Air Ambulance holds a very special place in my family's heart. They were there for my mum after a serious car accident, and we will always be grateful for the life-saving care they provided. This challenge is my way of giving something back, and while it will be tough at times, I'm expecting plenty of excitement along the way."
Overcoming Challenges and Raising Funds
One of the most daunting aspects of the journey will be mastering sand riding techniques as she traverses the Sahara Desert. Despite the physical and mental hurdles, Teresa remains determined, drawing strength from the cause. "Knowing I'm supporting such an incredible charity and thinking of the many bikers and families they've helped, will keep me going every mile," she added.
To date, Teresa has successfully raised over £1,000 through her JustGiving page, with support from 22 generous donors. She hopes to maximize donations before her departure in March, aiming to provide a significant boost to the charity's efforts.
Charity's Gratitude and Community Support
Tessa Klemz, regional fundraising manager at Yorkshire Air Ambulance, expressed profound gratitude for Teresa's initiative. "We're incredibly grateful to Teresa for choosing to support Yorkshire Air Ambulance through this challenge. Every fundraiser plays a vital role in helping us continue delivering life-saving care across Yorkshire and being there for patients when they need us most," she stated.
Klemz continued, "We wish Teresa the very best of luck as she sets off on this journey and thank her for helping ensure we can continue responding to emergencies across the region." This remarkable endeavor highlights the power of community spirit and personal dedication in supporting essential emergency services.
