Dudley Council Leader and Activist to Face Off in Charity Boxing Match
Dudley Political Rivals to Box for Charity in August

Dudley Political Figures Prepare for Charity Boxing Showdown

In an unusual turn of events, two prominent Dudley political figures are trading council chambers for the boxing ring. Conservative community campaigner Shaz Saleem and Dudley Council leader Councillor Patrick Harley are set to face each other in a charity boxing match at Dudley Town Hall on Friday, August 21.

Fundraising for Local Causes

The bout aims to raise substantial funds for charitable causes supported by the Mayor of Dudley. Organizers hope to generate up to £40,000 through ticket sales and donations. What began as personal fitness journeys for both men has transformed into a major fundraising initiative for the community.

Councillor Harley explained his motivation: "It started about twelve months ago when I realized I needed to make a change. I had gained weight, wasn't sleeping well, and felt generally unhealthy approaching my sixties. I enjoy food and drink too much for traditional diets, so boxing training became my solution."

Intensive Training Regimens

Both participants have committed to serious training despite neither being regular boxers. Councillor Harley trains at Coop's Boxing Camp in Kingswinford under former professional boxer Shaun Cooper and his team. The council leader described his training revelation: "While training, I must have taken a blow to the head because I thought having one match would be a great bucket list item for any boxing fan."

Saleem initially thought Harley was joking about the match. "I remember laughing when he first suggested it," Saleem admitted. "But when he mentioned doing it for charity, I realized what better way to raise money for worthwhile community causes. You can't get a bigger name than Pat in the borough."

Respect for the Sport

Both men emphasize their respect for boxing as a sport. Saleem stated: "We want to give respect to the sport. The athletes who participate professionally are incredible. We're training our socks off to do justice to the fight." Interestingly, Saleem plans to forgo head protection during the match, quipping that it "messes my hair up."

The friendly rivalry has already generated nicknames, with Saleem dubbing Harley "The Old Lion" while still tipping him as the favorite to win. Harley acknowledged their respective advantages: "I've probably got a reach advantage and definitely a weight advantage, but Shaz has youth on his side."

Event Details and Tickets

The charity boxing night will feature more than just the main political bout. An undercard of professional and amateur boxing matches will complete the evening's entertainment. Tickets are available through the Dudley borough halls website, with all proceeds supporting the mayor's chosen charities.

Harley reflected on the event's purpose: "Instead of two blokes with big egos getting in the ring just to tick our bucket lists, I thought if we do it for the mayor's charity, we're also doing some good for the community." Both participants promise an authentic contest, with Saleem confirming: "When the bell goes to start the fight, nobody will be pulling their punches."
