Tara-Brigitte Bhavnani, a 42-year-old former ballerina who dedicated more than two decades to the Royal Ballet, has embarked on a heartwarming new chapter. She now performs for sick children at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London through GOSH Charity, describing it as a "beautiful opportunity to take them away, for that brief moment, from everything they’re going through."
From Early Passion to Professional Career
Bhavnani's journey into dance began at the tender age of two in Ontario, Canada. She recalls loving to dance from a young age and actively pursued it as a lifelong career. Her dedication led her to the prestigious Canada's National Ballet School in Toronto, where she was a resident student starting at age 10.
A Distinguished Career with the Royal Ballet
After graduating, she earned a coveted place in the Royal Ballet Company in London. Over 20 years, Bhavnani performed in numerous productions, accumulating what she estimates to be "a few thousand performances on the Royal Opera House stage." Her career included roles in most of the company's productions, showcasing her talent and commitment to the art form.
A New Role Bringing Joy to Hospital Rooms
In 2022, Bhavnani decided to step back from the intense demands of being a Royal Ballet dancer. She applied for a role performing for children at Great Ormond Street Hospital, one of the world's leading children's hospitals. Now, she creates bespoke, personal performances in the hospital rooms of sick children.
Her performances are tailored to each child, aiming to "bring joy" to patients and their families during difficult times. This initiative not only highlights her artistic skills but also her compassion, as she uses ballet to provide a momentary respite from medical treatments and hospital stays.
Bhavnani's transition from the grand stages of the Royal Opera House to the intimate settings of hospital rooms underscores a powerful shift in her career. It reflects a deep desire to make a positive impact, leveraging her decades of experience to uplift and inspire those facing health challenges.
Through GOSH Charity, her work continues to support the hospital's mission, offering creative and emotional relief to young patients. This story serves as an inspiring example of how art can transcend traditional boundaries to touch lives in meaningful ways.
