A heartwarming family-run Santa's grotto in Cwmbran, Torfaen, is set to open its doors once again this festive season, with all proceeds dedicated to a vital children's cancer charity.
A Personal Mission Turned Community Success
The grotto is organised by the Roberts family, who launched the initiative last year following a personal crisis. David Roberts explained that the family decided to act after his mother was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Determined not to let the illness overshadow her favourite time of year, they transformed their home into a winter wonderland to raise funds for research.
The community response was immediate and overwhelming. Demand for bookings far exceeded the available spaces, making the inaugural event a resounding success. Through visitor donations, the family managed to raise an impressive £1,400 for bowel cancer charities.
Bigger and Better for 2024
Buoyed by last year's achievement, the Roberts family is now preparing for an even more ambitious event. This year, they have chosen to support the Latch Welsh Children's Cancer Charity. To enhance the experience, they are introducing a new mini-carnival games area for children and a small Christmas shop for last-minute gifts.
The grotto itself offers a full magical experience, featuring:
- A spectacular display of Christmas lights.
- Meetings with Santa's elves and the Grinch in his Whoville hut.
- Snowball fights with Buddy the Elf.
- A personal visit with Mr and Mrs Claus where children can share their wishes and receive a gift.
Hoping for a Record Fundraising Year
The family has already begun taking bookings and is confident that this year's event will be bigger and better. Their primary goal is to surpass the fundraising total from the previous year. "We are extremely proud of what we have achieved," said David Roberts, "and feel this is the best Christmas grotto around for families in South Wales."
