Father to Run London Marathon in Tribute to Daughter with Rare Condition
Simon Callaghan, a father of five from the village of Gilfach Goch, is preparing to take on the TCS London Marathon on April 26. He is running in memory of his late daughter, Chelsea Callaghan, who passed away in June last year after battling a severe genetic skin disorder.
Supporting DEBRA Charity for Butterfly Children
Simon aims to raise funds for DEBRA, the charity that supported Chelsea and his family throughout her life. Chelsea was born with Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare and crippling condition often referred to as making victims "butterfly children" due to their fragile skin.
DEBRA provides crucial assistance to families affected by EB, including help with travel expenses and funding for research into new treatments and medications. The charity gained public attention when former footballer Graeme Souness swam the English Channel for DEBRA and appeared on Good Morning Britain to raise awareness.
Living with Epidermolysis Bullosa
Chelsea's condition was so rare that at birth, she had no skin on her elbows or knees, leaving midwives and doctors puzzled. DEBRA quickly sent a specialist nurse from Great Ormond Street Hospital who diagnosed Chelsea with EB and offered support, easing her parents' concerns.
Children with EB are as fragile as a butterfly's wings, where even a gentle touch can cause severe damage and pain. Chelsea required bandages from her neck to her toes and endured up to six hours of daily dressing changes, experiencing extreme discomfort.
She was fed through a tube in her stomach because EB affects internal organs and bone density, often leading to fused fingers and toes. Despite these challenges, DEBRA's support, including visits from specialist nurses, made Chelsea's life more comfortable and brought smiles to her face.
A Mission of Honor and Support
Simon is proud to run the marathon for DEBRA, planning to fly the Welsh flag high on the day. He emphasizes that DEBRA's fantastic work helps families navigate the uncertainties of living with EB, just as it did for his own.
If people wish to support Simon's mission, donations can be made through the Enthuse charity page on Facebook or via the provided link. This effort not only honors Chelsea's memory but also aids DEBRA in continuing its vital support for other families facing similar struggles.
