Gloucester Estate Agent Prepares for London Marathon in Tribute to Late Brother
Tim O'Sullivan, director of CJ Hole Hucclecote Lettings and Estate Agents, is just under three weeks away from tackling the iconic London Marathon on April 26. He is running to raise vital funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, in memory of his brother Peter, a former Paratrooper who tragically took his own life a decade ago.
A Decade Since Loss: Honouring Peter's Legacy
This year marks ten years since Peter O'Sullivan, known as Ronnie, died at age 34 after struggling with PTSD and the transition to civilian life following military service. Peter served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan as part of the Pathfinder Platoon. His passing left the family devastated, prompting them to seek support from SSAFA.
Tim recalls: "After he passed away, we were devastated and knew we needed support. We reached out to SSAFA, and they were incredible—a listening ear, a charity that understood. Their emotional support was vital in our time of need."
The funeral was a difficult occasion, but the family was overwhelmed by the presence of family, friends, and a large number of Armed Forces personnel, including members from the Pathfinder Platoon and SAS.
Training and Motivation: A Personal Journey
To prepare for the 26-mile challenge, Tim has swapped his usual four- to six-mile runs for a strict training regimen. He admits the training is hard and the runs keep getting longer, but his motivation remains steadfast.
"I'm not just running for Peter or for SSAFA," Tim explains. "I'm running for every family who has lost someone either during or after service, as well as the sacrifices our Armed Forces have made, are making, and will make for us."
His decision to run came after a conversation with a friend who described the London Marathon as an incredible experience, citing the unparalleled atmosphere and support. For Tim, running has always been a form of escapism, a time to clear his head, making the marathon a fitting way to give back.
Support and Resources for the Armed Forces Community
SSAFA continues to offer crucial support to the Armed Forces community. Their Forcesline advisors are available to help with mental health challenges and stress Monday to Thursday, from 9am to 5pm, and on Fridays from 9am to 4pm (excluding bank holidays) on freephone 0800 260 6780, or via their website.
For urgent emotional support outside SSAFA's opening hours, the Samaritans are available 24/7 on 116 123. Tim's fundraising efforts aim to bolster these vital services, ensuring others receive the help his family did.
With the marathon date fast approaching, Tim's dedication serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing need for mental health support within the military community and the enduring impact of charitable work.
