Huddersfield Fundraiser Urges Public to Join 2026 MND Charity Events
Join 2026 MND charity events, urges Huddersfield fundraiser

A Huddersfield man who undertook a gruelling week of endurance challenges is now calling on others to join the fight against a devastating illness in 2026. Richard 'Benny' Shaw is encouraging would-be fundraisers to show their support for people living with motor neurone disease (MND) and their families by taking part in a series of special events.

Inspired by a Legend: The '7 in 7' Challenge

Richard's dedication was sparked by rugby league legend Rob Burrow, who died from MND in 2024. Last year, Richard and his friends Ryan and Craig took on a formidable '7 in 7' challenge to raise money for the MND Association. Their week of endurance included:

  • Running a marathon.
  • Skiing a marathon.
  • Running a marathon on a treadmill.
  • Cycling a marathon.

Now, the team is urging others to create their own fundraising events or sign up for organised challenges to support the MND community.

The Heart of the Mission: Awareness and Support

"At the heart of my fundraising is a desire to raise awareness of how devastating motor neurone disease is and the impact it has on people and their families," said Richard.

He emphasised the critical work of the MND Association, stating that seeing the difference they make—from funding vital research to providing practical and emotional support—has shown him just how important every single donation is. "I fundraise to help ensure that people living with MND don’t feel alone, and that there is continued hope, progress and support for everyone affected by this cruel disease," he added.

How You Can Make a Difference in 2026

The MND Association has outlined several key events for 2026 where people can channel their efforts. Supporters can choose from:

  • The Leeds Marathon.
  • The Royal Parks Half Marathon.
  • The North Yorkshire Action Challenge.
  • The Jurassic Coast Action Challenge.
  • A sponsored skydive.

Alternatively, individuals are encouraged to organise their own unique fundraising events.

Jodie Nash from the MND Association highlighted the urgent need for support, revealing a stark statistic: "During January, 186 people will be diagnosed with MND." She explained, "For them, the coming weeks and months will be uncertain and they will rely on support and information to help them navigate the challenges which lie ahead."

"By getting involved in one of our special events in 2026 you will be doing something amazing," Jodie said. "You will be making sure that people with MND, their families and carers get access to support and information provided by the MND Association, while also funding vital research."
