Llangadog's Icy Plunge Raises £1,400+ for Parkinson's UK
Llangadog's Icy Plunge for Parkinson's UK

In a display of remarkable community spirit and courage, twenty-two individuals from Llangadog took a freezing dip in the local river to raise vital funds for Parkinson's UK. The annual event, which faced uncertainty due to severe flooding and poor weather in the lead-up, went ahead under clearer skies, with participants battling a biting wind that made the air feel like a mere 5 degrees Celsius.

A Dip Driven by Personal Connection

The motivation for braving the icy water was deeply personal for many. For participant Sara Penson, the swim was a poignant tribute to her father. "My wonderful dad John Pilcher slipped away on December 4, 2023, a few days before his 81st birthday," she shared. "He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s only 18 months earlier. Witnessing the rapid decline of my clever, dependable, active dad becoming confused, helpless and bed-ridden was devastating." Sara's heartfelt plea echoed the sentiments of the group: "Please help find a cure for this cruel disease and support Parkinson’s UK."

Community Warmth After the Chill

Following their brave endeavour, the dippers were warmly welcomed by supporting family and friends. They thawed out with traditional mulled wine and mince pies before heading to The Red Lion in Llangadog. There, they enjoyed celebratory drinks and a bowl of cawl, a Welsh stew, kindly donated by chef Romica Pavel. The festive atmosphere was bolstered by Christmas carols and an impromptu auction, which significantly boosted the fundraising total.

The Vital Cause: Supporting Parkinson's UK

The event has so far collected over £1,400, with donations continuing to be accepted until March 2026. The funds support the critical work of Parkinson's UK, a charity dedicated to every step of the Parkinson's journey. Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition affecting around 166,000 people in the UK. With someone diagnosed every 20 minutes, the charity campaigns for better care, funds groundbreaking research, and runs life-changing support services.

Currently, Parkinson's UK is running a major Nurse Appeal, aiming to raise £9 million over three years to fund additional healthcare professionals. For anyone needing support, the Parkinson's UK helpline is 0808 800 0303. Further information can be found at www.parkinsons.org.uk.
