Young footballers from a North Wales community have scored a major victory off the pitch, delivering a record-breaking donation to a vital local service. The junior teams of Penrhyn Bay Football Club have rallied together to collect more than 870 essential items for the Conwy Food Bank, in an act of generosity that has overwhelmed volunteers.
A Club-Wide Effort for the Community
The impressive haul was gathered by children and parents from across the club's junior sections. The donation drive included a wide variety of much-needed supplies, from fresh and frozen food to long-life store-cupboard items. The club also contributed personal hygiene products, toiletries, baby food, and nappies, addressing critical needs beyond just nutrition.
Conwy Food Bank, a voluntary organisation, provides emergency food parcels to local residents facing crises. These packages are designed to last three to four days and are distributed to people referred by professional organisations such as social services, doctors, and charities.
"We're Overwhelmed": Food Bank's Reaction
Nancy Hughes, the coordinator for Conwy Food Bank, expressed her delight at the scale of the contribution. "We're overwhelmed, we don't think we've ever had a donation this big - we're absolutely delighted," she said. "A huge thank you to everyone at the club for their efforts."
The timing of the donation is particularly significant as colder months place increased pressure on household budgets. Ben Lobban, a coach for the Penrhyn Bay Girls Under 12s side, highlighted this motivation. "We know that many families face difficulties throughout the year, especially during the winter and around Christmas time," he explained.
Football Club at the Heart of Local Life
Lobban emphasised the club's community spirit, stating, "As a whole club we wanted to do something to help people in our community at this time of year." He praised the Conwy Food Bank for its "fantastic job supporting people in need" and celebrated the "fantastic response from families across our age groups to support this worthy cause."
The effort underscores the central role the football club plays in the area. Penrhyn Bay Football Club is a hub for local activity, with more than 350 girls, boys, and volunteers registered. It fields teams ranging from under-6s all the way up to a men's senior side, making its collective action a powerful force for good in the Conwy region.
