Sunshine and festive spirit shone on South Park in Darlington as the town's second annual Mental Elf Festive Fun Run proved a spectacular success, raising a vital £5,000 for local mental health services.
Record Turnout for a Festive Fundraiser
Defying the torrential rain of the previous day, the event was blessed with clear skies, drawing a record crowd. 300 participants signed up to run or walk the 5km course, marking a 50% increase on the inaugural event last year. They were joined by plenty of enthusiastic dogs, with everyone encouraged to don their most creative and colourful Christmas costumes.
The atmosphere was electric, kept lively with Christmas music from a DJ. Participants were serenaded around the route by the Cockerton Silver Band, while pantomime characters from The Majestic Theatre entertained spectators and families. A festive selfie booth run by Yorkshire Rose Events also proved a hugely popular feature.
Community Spirit in Full Force
Before setting off, the crowd was energised by a warm-up session led by Physique Health Club. The event was made possible by the generous sponsorship of EE and Aldi, and the tireless work of volunteers and staff.
Jemma Gregory, marketing and development officer for Darlington Mind, said: "The atmosphere on the day was absolutely amazing - it was wonderful to see so many people with smiling faces, full of festive cheer, and really embracing the Christmas spirit."
She added: "As a small team, we rely heavily on the incredible support of our staff and volunteers... Every single person who attended, helped on the day, or worked tirelessly behind the scenes played a vital part."
Funding Vital Local Support
Every penny raised will go directly to Darlington Mind's frontline services. It is crucial to note that Darlington Mind is an independent local charity, separate from the national Mind organisation. This guarantees that all funds stay within the region, financing crucial support, counselling, wellbeing activities, and specialist programmes for people across Darlington, Hambleton, Richmondshire and South-West Durham.
With this year's success, planning is already underway for the next event. The third Mental Elf Festive Fun Run is scheduled to take place on November 29, 2026. The community is eagerly invited to save the date and continue supporting mental health in the local area.
