Blackburn Diocese Mothers' Union Earns Bronze Award for Domestic Abuse Advocacy
The Mothers' Union (MU) in the Blackburn Diocese has been honoured with a Bronze Award by the Central MU, acknowledging its dedicated work to raise awareness about domestic abuse. This accolade coincides with the MU's national 150th anniversary and approaches the 100th anniversary of its establishment in Lancashire next year.
Global Campaign and Local Commitment
The award is part of the international 'Rise Up' campaign, launched in 2023 at the MU Annual Gathering in York by worldwide President Sheran Harper. Rise Up aims to illuminate the realities of domestic abuse and inspire practical action within communities. For MU members in Blackburn Diocese, this call has reinforced over three decades of focused efforts.
Since 1991, the MU has actively supported the United Nations' 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, held annually from November 25 to December 10. In Lancashire, the MU has responded through various initiatives, drawing attention to abuse on a global scale and advocating for meaningful solutions. The launch of Rise Up in 2023 has further deepened this commitment.
Practical Actions and Community Impact
Blackburn Diocese MU President, Susan Willoughby from Bilsborrow near Preston, stated: "Confronting the extent of domestic abuse in all its forms – both physical and mental – has taken many members beyond their comfort zones. Yet across the diocese, the response has been courageous, practical and compassionate."
The MU has implemented several key actions:
- Placing posters with helpline details on the backs of toilet doors in churches and other public spaces.
- Forming partnerships with organisations that care for victims of abuse.
- Hosting open meetings and exhibitions to raise awareness among congregations and local communities.
Susan added: "Members have also offered vital, hands-on support to women and children fleeing abusive situations. Families often arrive at refuges with nothing more than the clothes they are wearing."
MU branches have shown remarkable generosity by:
- Supplying essential items for those entering emergency accommodation.
- Replacing books, toys, and games left behind by children forced to escape quickly.
Award Recognition and Future Goals
In recognition of this sustained and wide-ranging work, the central Mothers' Union team introduced Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards for branches meeting set criteria. By the end of 2025, more than half of the MU branches in Blackburn Diocese had achieved one of these levels, leading to the diocesan-wide Bronze Award announced this month.
Susan continued: "As The Mothers' Union celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, its mission remains forward-looking. Ending violence, ending injustice and ending poverty continue to sit at the heart of its purpose. Here in Blackburn Diocese, members remain firmly committed to each of these aims as they continue to put their faith into action through service to their communities and beyond."
