Mountain Rescue Volunteers Becky and Iain Ashcroft Awarded MBEs at Windsor Castle
Husband and wife volunteers Becky and Iain Ashcroft have been honoured with prestigious MBEs during a special ceremony held at Windsor Castle. The dedicated pair received their insignia from Prince William on 11 March, following decades of unwavering service to the community.
Over Six Decades of Lifesaving Service
Between them, Becky and Iain have spent more than 60 years volunteering as mountain rescue responders for North East Wales Search and Rescue (NEWSAR). They are believed to be the first husband and wife team ever to receive the MBE jointly for their exceptional work in mountain rescue.
The couple admitted they were completely taken by surprise when the letter informing them of the nomination first arrived. "We are still both surprised when someone mentions that we are both MBEs, and I do wonder if we will ever lose that sense of wonderment," Becky said.
A Testament to Teamwork and Community Support
Becky emphasised that their work is fundamentally about teamwork, praising the strong group of fellow volunteers who support them in North Wales. "In accepting the award today, we are also acknowledging the fantastic work that they, and all mountain rescue responders across the country, do," she added.
The duo often work alongside other professionals, including emergency services, the Coastguard, and the RAF, to save lives in challenging conditions. Iain noted that many people do not realise that mountain rescue teams are actually made up entirely of unpaid volunteers.
"We drop what we are doing – family events, work, social occasions and leisure time – to respond quickly to those in need of our help," Iain explained. Keeping their skills sharp requires hundreds of hours of training and practice, all of which is done in their own spare time.
Challenges and Rewards of Volunteer Rescue Work
The volunteers also have to maintain their own specialist vehicles and carry out their own fundraising to pay for vital equipment. Iain said they do it because of their shared love for the outdoors and the sense of achievement they get from helping others.
"Today’s investiture recognises the significant contribution that volunteers like Becky and myself make to communities and individuals across the UK," he shared.
The couple also wished to thank the local businesses and members of the public who donate the funds needed for their clothing and gear. "Without those vital funds, there would be no mountain rescue teams. If you have donated to support mountain rescue in the last year – thank you!" they said.
An Unforgettable Day of Pride and Gratitude
Becky and Iain described the day at the castle as a mix of excitement and nerves that resulted in a huge sense of pride. "Today has been one of those occasions that will live with you forever, and we cannot thank enough everyone who contributed to making it happen," the couple concluded.
Their story highlights the incredible dedication of volunteer rescue teams across the nation, showcasing how selfless service can lead to royal recognition and inspire others to support such vital community efforts.
