Huddersfield Grammar Pupils Deliver 400+ Care Packages and Meals to Vulnerable Residents
Pupils Deliver 400+ Care Packages and Meals in Huddersfield

Pupils at Huddersfield Grammar School have delivered more than 400 care packages and hot meals to support hundreds of vulnerable individuals across the town. Year 9 children, aged 13 and 14, have spearheaded a school-wide drive to support the Teams4U Shoebox Appeal and Huddersfield Street Kitchen, responding to increased seasonal demand for support.

School-Wide Mobilisation

Leading assemblies, coordinating donation appeals and organising collections, the pupils mobilised the entire school community before volunteering at the Teams4U sorting warehouse to help prepare boxes for distribution. Their efforts resulted in 125 shoeboxes packed with gifts from hats and gloves to toys and sweets, as part of the charity’s drive to support vulnerable children and their families in countries such as Moldova, Romania and Ukraine.

Personal Care Packages and Hot Meals

In addition, pupils oversaw the collection and packing of more than 200 personal care packages for distribution to local people via the Huddersfield Street Kitchen. Students sorted through piles of donations of clothing items to collate appropriate packages for all service users of Huddersfield Street Kitchen, each individually tied with a ribbon and a handmade card with a suitable heartfelt message. The personal care packages included donated toiletries and essential hygiene items, individually bagged into hand decorated bags with a hand painted gift label.

Year 10 pupils also showed their support by making more than 80 vegetarian curries, alongside flapjack and gingerbread, ensuring all visitors to the Street Kitchen received a hot, nutritious meal. The street kitchen was set up in 2018 and regularly feeds more than 100 people each week.

Positive Change Project

The initiative forms part of Huddersfield Grammar’s enrichment curriculum, through which pupils in Years 7 to 9 take part in a Positive Change Project. This is designed to help them develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills while making a meaningful difference in their communities and beyond.

Community Response

Danny Burrows, founder of Huddersfield Street Kitchen, said: “The hot meals that were made and put into containers were amazing. It was great that we could give people a meal that they could take home, and also provide a meal on the night that stayed warm. The packages were brilliant. We were able to go out on cold evenings and take the packages with us which helped so many people.”

Stuart Rees, headteacher at Huddersfield Grammar, added: “We are so very proud of our students, who have made a huge difference to those in need through their Positive Change Project. This is an amazing achievement and testament to the care and dedication shown by our students and the wider school community. Their efforts demonstrate our commitment to character development, kindness, and ensuring our young people contribute positively to society.”

Huddersfield Grammar is part of Blenheim Schools, a leading family of all-ability independent schools with a focus on high-quality education that reflects the individual needs, learning styles and aspirations of pupils.
