In an extraordinary display of dedication, two volunteers from the Walmer RNLI are pushing their physical limits to support the charity's vital lifesaving missions. Dan Sinclair and his friend Nathan Siddans are embarking on a series of gruelling endurance events, all while clad in the full protective gear worn by RNLI inshore lifeboat crews.
Marathon Challenges in Full Kit
The fundraising initiative kicks off with the Deal half marathon on February 15, where Dan and Nathan will be outfitted in thermals, drysuits, steel toe-capped boots, lifejackets, and helmets. This demanding attire is designed to withstand harsh sea conditions, adding significant weight and challenge to their run.
Just two months later, on April 26, the duo will take on the iconic London Marathon, covering the full 26.2-mile distance. Once again, they will be fully equipped in RNLI inshore lifeboat gear, symbolising the physical readiness and unwavering commitment demonstrated by RNLI volunteers in their daily duties.
A Legacy of Volunteerism and Fundraising Success
Dan Sinclair, who has devoted 18 years of service as a volunteer at Walmer RNLI, shared his motivation behind the challenges. "We want to raise as much money as possible to help the RNLI continue its vital work saving lives at sea," he explained. "Nathan and I had the idea to do the challenges in kit to symbolise the physical readiness and commitment shared by RNLI volunteers every day."
This is not the first time Dan and Nathan have undertaken such ambitious feats for charity. In October 2025, they far exceeded their £2,000 fundraising target by raising an impressive £16,000 for the RNLI. Their previous challenge involved a 1,000-mile cycle from John o’Groats to Land’s End, combined with summiting the three highest peaks in the UK: Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon.
Community Support and Future Goals
Nathan Siddans expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the community and loved ones following last year's successful endeavour. "We’ve had incredible support from our community and loved ones following last year’s challenge, and we want to build on that momentum to raise even more funds for the RNLI," he said.
He emphasised that every contribution plays a crucial role: "We are so grateful for any support as it helps to motivate us on our training runs and every penny raised supports the selfless volunteer crews who save lives at sea."
By undertaking these extreme physical tests in full lifeboat attire, Dan and Nathan aim to not only raise essential funds but also highlight the rigorous demands faced by RNLI volunteers. Their efforts underscore the charity's reliance on public donations to maintain its lifesaving operations across the UK's coastline.
