Rowcroft Hospice's Urgent Fundraising Drive for South Devon Families

This February, Rowcroft Hospice is rallying the South Devon community for a critical fundraising challenge designed to aid local families during their most difficult times. Through the 'Every Moment Matters Appeal,' a 36-hour matched funding campaign, the hospice seeks to generate an impressive £200,000. This sum will directly fund specialized care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses throughout the region, ensuring that every moment counts for patients and their loved ones.

Matched Funding Campaign Details

The campaign kicks off at 10 a.m. on Sunday, February 22, and concludes at 10 p.m. on Monday, February 23. During this brief window, all contributions will be matched by local businesses, community groups, and generous individuals, effectively doubling the impact of each donation. This urgent effort underscores the hospice's philosophy that every moment matters, not only in patient care but also in community support.

A Family's Journey with Rowcroft Hospice

At the core of this appeal is the heartfelt story of the Lewis-Clarke family from Kingsteignton. Michelle Lewis-Clarke recounts how Rowcroft Hospice provided crucial support during some of her family's toughest challenges. Her husband, Jim Lewis-Clarke, a retired police officer diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in 2017, initially continued to enjoy life through activities like walking the South West Coast path, kayaking, and golf.

However, as Jim's condition deteriorated in 2024, Rowcroft's Community Team intervened. Michelle praised their palliative care nurse, Tracey, as a 'saviour.' When home care became unmanageable, Jim was admitted to Rowcroft's Inpatient Unit, where he felt immediately at ease. After five weeks, the hospice facilitated his return home, arranging necessary equipment and care teams swiftly.

This move revitalized Jim, allowing him to eat, laugh, and enjoy simple pleasures like a glass of wine. The family cherished four additional months together, filled with beach trips, moor walks, and even a vow renewal ceremony. When Jim suffered a stroke in January 2025, Rowcroft's Hospice at Home Team offered round-the-clock care, described by Michelle as 'whispering angels' for their dignity and kindness.

Emily, Jim's daughter, highlighted how this support brought peace, enabling friends to say goodbye in their own ways. Jim passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, a testament to Rowcroft's compassionate service. Michelle emphasized that Rowcroft is a 'Godsend' for the local community, making such meaningful moments possible.

Impact of the Every Moment Matters Appeal

Funds raised through this campaign will sustain Rowcroft Hospice's ability to deliver specialized care and support across South Devon. By enabling more families to maximize precious time together, the appeal reinforces the hospice's commitment to enhancing quality of life during challenging times. The community is encouraged to participate through donations and social media engagement to help meet the £200,000 target.
