Runners Embark on Epic 240-Mile Journey for Springhill Hospice
Springhill Hospice has long been a beacon of compassion, dignity, and care during life's most challenging moments, relying entirely on the generosity of the local community to sustain its vital services. In a remarkable display of dedication, two runners are now undertaking an extraordinary challenge to ensure this support endures for years to come.
An Unprecedented Double Challenge
In April 2026, Alex and James will participate in the London Marathon, but their commitment extends far beyond the standard 26.2-mile race. To honor Alex's father, Darren, who spent his final days under the hospice's care, the pair will first run an incredible 214 miles from Rochdale to London over five days. Setting off on Tuesday, April 21, from Springhill Hospice, they will arrive in the capital on Saturday, only to line up for the official marathon the very next morning. In total, they will cover a staggering 240 miles in just six days, with a fundraising goal of £26,000 to directly support the hospice's essential work.
A Personal Story of Resilience and Care
Alex's father, Darren, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2012 at the age of 45. A fit and active individual, his diagnosis came as a devastating shock to his family, who were initially told that one in three people with MND die within a year. Darren defied the odds, living well for eight years before requiring hospice support in January 2020. He passed away on January 23 after one precious night at Springhill Hospice, an experience that left a profound and lasting impact on his loved ones.
Alex shared, "I don’t know what we would have done without Springhill Hospice. The care given to my dad and our family was incredible, which made the most traumatic time of our lives that bit easier. Springhill Hospice is a pillar of our community, and we need to do everything we can to keep the doors open."
From Personal Loss to Professional Mission
This deeply personal experience inspired Alex to join Springhill Hospice in February 2024 as the Head of Income Generation and Marketing. In this role, he now oversees fundraising and retail operations, driven by a clear mission to ensure the hospice can continue providing critical care to others in their time of need. His story underscores the hospice's reliance on community support, especially as hospices nationwide face an unprecedented funding crisis, with many reducing services or risking closure.
A Call to Action for the Community
Springhill Hospice thrives because of the generosity of people who give, communities that care, and stories like Darren's that highlight its importance. Alex and James are urging the community to stand with them every step of the way, through every mile and every donation, to help ensure the hospice remains a steadfast resource for those in need. Their extraordinary effort exemplifies the remarkable lengths supporters go to sustain these vital services.
