Rushcliffe Borough Council Supports Edwalton Charity with Funding Boost

An Edwalton-based charity dedicated to fighting clothing poverty has received a significant boost from Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC). Sharewear Clothing Scheme has been awarded a £500 grant from RBC's Community Wellbeing Fund, which will help cover costs for staff uniforms and provide additional training for its volunteers.

Celebrating 12 Years of Service

The charity, which marks its 12th anniversary on March 28, offers free donated clothing and bedding to individuals and families facing financial hardships. Through a referral scheme and outreach efforts, Sharewear ensures that people in need can access essential items that support their dignity, comfort, and overall quality of life.

With a small team of employees, the organisation relies heavily on a dedicated group of volunteers who perform crucial roles such as sorting donations, managing logistics, and assisting clients directly. Currently, Sharewear is actively recruiting more Rushcliffe residents to join its volunteer team, helping participants build confidence, develop new skills, and improve their mental wellbeing.

Volunteer Success and Community Impact

Several volunteers have successfully secured employment after their involvement with the charity, including those returning to work after extended absences. Volunteers are also encouraged to participate in fundraising and social activities, fostering a strong sense of community and connection.

Emily Ashton, the scheme's fundraising and development manager, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, "We are very grateful for the support towards uniforms, which means that our team and volunteers are easily identifiable to assist those visiting Sharewear to choose clothing. A consistent and welcoming appearance helps create a supportive environment, making it easier for attendees to feel comfortable and at ease when choosing clothing."

Council Endorsement and Broader Goals

Councillor Brennan added, "We're pleased to support Sharewear through our Community Wellbeing Fund. This small investment contributes to the charity's wider impact, which includes tackling clothing poverty, promoting volunteering, and supporting residents into employment – all aligning with Rushcliffe's priorities around inclusion and community resilience."

The charity's work not only addresses urgent material needs but also helps reduce social isolation and promote overall wellbeing. This project offers meaningful volunteering opportunities for Rushcliffe residents while assisting vulnerable people across the region, aligning with local priorities to reduce inequality and build connected, resilient communities.
